About Taner Akyol
Taner Akyol, several times awarded as a baglama soloist and as a composer of chamber music in numerous competitions (MusicaVitale, Hanns Eisler Award), is also one of the most well known contemporary saz virtuosos. He was the first who brought the baglama to the attention of the European composers and academic scene.
In his long career, he has had several CD releases, including a CD with the famous Theodoraki's performer, singer Maria Farantouri. Taner Akyol's music is committed to the western European avant-garde, still influenced, however, by the sounds of the composer's cultural heritage.
The cultural influences of his heritage are omnipresent in his compositional works, in the form of a rich melismatic melody as well as in a plethora of his orchestra scores, in the form of a quite oriental style heteropony.
Taner Akyol has just released the children's opera Ali Baba and the 40 thieves for the Berlin Comic Opera, premiering on October 28th, 2012.
